Porcelain vs Ceramic Tile: Which to Buy

Porcelain is ceramic fired denser and hotter, so it absorbs less water and costs more. That single property decides where each one belongs, how it cuts, and how much waste you should budget.

The absorption difference

Both tiles are clay, fired. The definition that matters is a laboratory one: a tile counts as porcelain if it absorbs 0.5% or less of its weight in water. Anything above that is ceramic, and most wall ceramic is between 3% and 7%.

That comes from the body. Porcelain uses a finer clay with more feldspar, pressed harder and fired to around 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit until it is nearly vitrified — closer to glass than to pottery. Ceramic is fired cooler, so the body keeps more open pore structure.

Everything else follows from that. A denser body is harder, heavier, more brittle at the edge, more difficult to cut, frost-proof, and more expensive. A more porous body is lighter, easier to score and snap, cheaper, and cannot go anywhere that freezes.

Weight is the practical consequence people meet first. Porcelain runs about 10% heavier per square foot than ceramic of the same thickness, which matters for a wall install and matters a great deal for a 2,000 pound pallet delivery. It also matters for the thinset: a heavier tile on a wall needs a mortar rated for that weight, and the bag says so.

The installed figures are worth attention. Material is a small part of a tile job: at $10 or more per square foot for labour, choosing porcelain over ceramic changes the total by around 10%, not by the 60% the material price difference suggests. If you are hiring the work out, the upgrade is cheaper than it looks on the shelf tag.

One caution on the cheapest end of the ceramic range. Budget ceramic has looser size tolerance — a nominal 12 inch tile can vary by 1/16 inch between pieces in the same box. That forces a wider grout joint to absorb the difference, which changes the look and roughly doubles the grout order. Rectified porcelain, ground to size after firing, is what allows a 1/16 inch joint.

Cutting and waste

Ceramic cuts on a manual score-and-snap cutter for straight cuts, and takes a nibbler or a grinder for holes. It is forgiving.

Porcelain needs a wet saw with a continuous rim diamond blade, and it needs the blade to be sharp. The dense body chips at the glazed edge if the feed rate is too fast, and a chipped edge on a perimeter cut is usually hidden by the baseboard but a chipped edge on a niche or a doorway is not.

Practical consequence for ordering: budget one to two points more waste on porcelain than on ceramic for the same layout. Where the table says 10% for a grid, use 11% or 12% for porcelain, especially on your first tile job. The full set of numbers by pattern is in tile waste factor by pattern.

Three more cutting notes worth knowing before the tile arrives:

  1. Through-body porcelain hides chips. The colour runs the full thickness, so a chipped edge shows the same colour rather than a white body. Worth paying for on stair nosings and any exposed edge.
  2. Large format needs a bigger saw. Anything over 24 inches will not fit a tabletop wet saw; you need a rail cutter or a bridge saw, which is a $60 to $90 day rental.
  3. Score-and-snap does not work on floor porcelain. It will break off the scored line. Thin wall porcelain sometimes cooperates; floor tile never does.

Floors vs walls vs outdoors

The absorption number is not an abstraction — it is the deciding factor in three specific situations.

The freeze case is the one with no exception. A ceramic tile on an exterior step will take on water, freeze, and break apart from inside over one or two winters. This is not about brand or quality; it is physics, and no sealer prevents it.

Slip resistance is a separate property from both absorption and hardness, and it is the one to check for a bathroom floor or anywhere that gets wet. Look for the DCOF figure on the technical sheet: 0.42 or higher is the accepted threshold for a level interior floor likely to be walked on wet. A polished porcelain with a DCOF of 0.30 is beautiful and genuinely dangerous in a bathroom.

PEI rating

PEI is a surface abrasion class from 1 to 5, and it tells you where a glazed tile can be used. It is a property of the glaze, not the body, so a porcelain tile can have a low PEI and a ceramic tile a high one. Check it separately from absorption.

Buy PEI 3 or better for any floor and PEI 4 for an entry. A low-absorption porcelain with a soft glaze will wear a traffic path through the pattern just as fast as ceramic would, which is why the two numbers have to be read together.
